These two open source developers, David Emory and Brian Ferris, caught the attention of the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Portland (TriMet) when the agency wanted a new public transit trip-planner. Tri-Met had been using a proprietary trip-planner that didn’t combine the area’s several modes of transit in one cohesive set of directions. Not wanting to spend that money, TriMet teamed up with Emory and Ferris to create an open source multi-modal trip planner that other transit agencies could contribute to the development of, and use for free. Developers from all over the world now contribute to this application, which has the potential to be disruptive in the proprietary transit trip-planner app market.
