Doug McNeil co-developed Lighting for Literacy (LFL), a humanitarian STEM project for youth to bring light into the homes of 1.5 Billion people who live off-grid. As a Rotarian, community leader and successful engineer, Doug organized a partnership between Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club and Los Gatos United Methodist Church. He, along with other engineers, designed a renewal, sustainable, solar lighting system and trained teens, ages 13 to 17, to assemble, solder, and program the units. Doug’s belief is that the hope of the future is education. Mentoring youth with STEM knowledge that creates change in the lives of others will enable the next generation of Rotarians to bring about profound and inspirational change previously not believed possible. Today, LFL units are changing the lives of children in both Mexico and India and will continue to bring light and opportunity into to those who live in the dark after sunset.
