Elizabeth “Liesl” Chatman has served in significant educational leadership positions in university, school district, and museum settings. She is the Director of Teacher Professional Development at the Science Museum of Minnesota with the mission of increasing scientific literacy and eliminating achievement gaps in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) at the K-12 level. Liesl has received several major grants from the National Science Foundation to promote gender equity in science education and is the lead author of Girls in Science: A Framework for Action, which received the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award in Professional Development–Education Equity from the Association of Educational Publishers. Liesl and her team are particularly interested in working with teachers on the intersections of race, class, gender, and the nature of science in order to promote culturally competent teaching in STEM.
