Maria Burgos is a college senior graduating later this month with a degree in Health and Human Biology. While in college, Burgos has participated in various mentoring and advocacy groups such as Emergency Medical Services, was an intern at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, visited Haiti and Columbia on public service trips, and participated in Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day 2014. Burgos entered the Los Angeles foster care system when she was eleven months old and subsequently spent 15 years in care. After dedicating a year of service to AmeriCorps beginning in the fall, she plans to pursue medical school and use that platform to drive change in the policy and practice of the total care of foster youth. Maria Burgos is senior at Brown University.
