Readout of White House Drug Policy Director Meetings at the United Nations
New York, New York -- Michael Botticelli, Director of National Drug Control Policy, met last Thursday at the United Nations with UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, UN Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, and U.S. Senior Advisor for Economic and Social Affairs Amb. David Dunn to discuss domestic and international drug policy.
Director Botticelli discussed the Obama Administration’s evidence-based drug strategy to reduce drug use and its consequences through prevention, early intervention, treatment, and supply reduction.
In preparation of the United Nations Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs in 2016, Director Botticelli reaffirmed the Administration’s support for the current UN Conventions and international drug control treaties. He noted how innovative public health and criminal justice reforms pioneered by the Administration are gaining acceptance around the world.
The United States supports international partners through a range of initiatives, including providing training and aid to advance judicial and police reform, encouraging evidence-based prevention and treatment, creating stronger border controls and coordinating drug interdiction efforts.
