App Challenge

In April of 2012, the Department of Labor announced the winners of the "Equal Pay App Challenge." The Equal Pay App Challenge was launched in order to develop valuable tools in a non-traditional format to support the National Equal Pay Task Force.

The Equal Pay App Challenge called on software developers to use publicly available data and resources to create innovative, easy-to-use applications (apps) that educate users about the pay gap and provide tools to combat it. The apps developed focused on the accessibility of pay data broken down by gender, race and ethnicity, and provided coaching on early career pay, pay negotiation or career mentorship. The App Challenge served to increase access about pay data, and using that data, help women throughout their careers as they negotiate starting pay, request a promotion or a raise, or consider switching fields to a more lucrative career path.

Two of the successful tools prompted by the App Challenge are:

Aequitas Mobile App

Aequitas empowers users with current wage data, interview, resume and negotiation tools. It also provides wage and Equal Pay Act information and connects to equal pay-related social networks/discussions. The application is both iPhone and iPad accessible.

OES Data Explorer

OES Data Explorer provides easy access to U.S. wage estimates by city, state, and job title from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics program.
