Welcome to the Council on Women and Girls Weekly Highlights! This week, President Obama delivered an address to the nation on the consequences the stalemate in Congress could have on the stability of our economy. Additionally, White House Administration Officials held “Office Hours" on our social networks to answer your questions about the President’s speech and the ongoing deficit debate. If you missed this week’s office hours, you can view our full schedule at WhiteHouse.gov/officehours and follow @WhiteHouse for the latest updates.
In case you missed it last week, First Lady Michelle Obama joined three thousand military and civilian volunteers in Fayetteville, NC to give Barbara Summey Marshall, a selfless Navy veteran the surprise of her life,. Marshall served 15 years in the Navy and shares her home with the Steps N Stages Jubilee House, which provides shelter, support and services such as mentoring and life coaching, to homeless female veterans. This project, and Marshall's own devotion to her fellow veterans, is exactly the kind of service the First Lady’s Joining Forces initiative is designed to celebrate.
