The Council on Women and Girls joined President Obama in welcoming the WNBA’s, Phoenix Mercury to the White House. The visit honored their 2009 championship season. The Mercury defeated the Indiana Fever during a five game series this fall, securing their second championship title since 2007.
The women were joined in the State Dining Room by friends, family, excited coaches from local girls’ basketball leagues, and some young women leaders. Adrian Morris, from Antioch, California, was one of the young female leaders in the audience. Adrian, who is participating in Running Start's Young Women’s Political Leadership Program, said the event was inspiring.
President Obama commended the players for demonstrating true commitment and leadership for aspiring girls around the country. As a father and a fan, the President was thrilled about getting the chance to meet the championship team. After his remarks, the team made a quick change into their jersey's and went outside to join local YMCA youth for a "Let's Move" training session on the White House basketball court. The players high-fived and cheered on the girls and boys, who were excited to get outside and play despite the DC heat wave. When asked what the kids learned from the players, one boy remarked "even though it’s hot, never give up!"
